Partnership explores piezo technology for energy harvesting

A pioneering project to design and build an energy harvesting demonstration system that will provide a renewable source of energy is being carried out between ceramic components manufacturer Morgan Technical Ceramics ElectroCeramics and Glyndwr University.

Taking the form of a Shorter Knowledge Transfer Partnership (sKTP), the project is based around piezo electric devices connected to a mat that will collect and store energy from footfall for reuse. The project will specifically look at how to best match the electronics to the piezo ceramic to develop more efficient energy harvesters.

MTC — expert in piezo electric ceramics — is working with academics at Glyndŵr University to prove this alternative energy source by constructing a proof of concept prototype. MTC turned to the university for its expertise in computer aided design, Finite Element Analysis, electrical power systems, power electronics and PCB design which are essential for this new application area.

“Industry is under increased pressure to find alternative renewable energy sources and to improve energy efficiency,” says Dr Ashley Darby, Business Manager – Piezo Shapes, at MTC ElectroCeramics. “By carrying out this sKTP in collaboration with Glyndŵr University we can share our knowledge and expertise to innovate and identify opportunities for energy harvesting utilising Piezo electric ceramics”.

Part-funded by Government, sKTPs enable companies such as MTC ElectroCeramics to gain access to qualified people and experts within the UK’s universities to help take an organisation forward and work in new areas. Through undertaking this sKTP, both organisations can promote practical usage of alternative energies.
