A one-day conference to assist delegates enhance the performance and operation of their IT departments and reduce the impact their business has on the environment is to be hosted by BSI in London in May. Speakers at Green IT will include representatives from the Datacentre Specialist Group, Microsoft, Computer Aid International, Royal Mail and DEFRA.

Companies are competing in an increasingly ‘green’ market, and IT has a large part to play in this, says BSI. Traditionally regarded as the largest consumer of energy in an organization, a step change is needed in ICT practices as companies are pressured into reducing their overall energy usage. The event is aimed particularly at IT directors and managers, CIOs, finance directors, facilities and energy managers, and environment officers and managers — all those in both the private and public sector responsible for IT strategy and creating a more sustainable future.

Delegates will learn about the latest technology developments, issues and trends in Green IT, and examine the sustainability issues underpinning the ICT industry. A newly-published EU Code of Conduct on Data Centres Energy Efficiency includes a best practice statement which will form the basis for some of the work in this area.

BSI says the event, at the CBI Conference Centre on May 19, covers the environmental considerations for both the manufacturing and disposal of IT equipment, and the energy implications of its use. Delegates will also hear relevant examples of how Green IT practices can reduce costs and improve the public perception of a business.

Further information on the programme, speakers and booking can be found at www.bsigroup.com/green-it and a discount is offered to delegates also booking to attend the BSI IT Governance conference and workshop on May 20 -21.
