Energy consumption of a leading brand of lighting used on luxury yachts has been halved by switching from halogen to LED technology

LED lighting saves marine powerSavage Marine, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of lighting to the yacht market, has halved the energy consumption of its ultra bright interior and exterior downlighters by adopting the latest 10W LED technology from Marl to replace halogen lights.

According to Jon Freeman, Research Technician at Savage Marine: “The new 10W LED fittings offer the same warm glow as halogen, and don’t have the ‘ghosting’ effect created by some LED lights — yet they use just half the energy of our halogen products. The LEDs last much longer, too — up to 50,000 hours as against 1000 hours for incandescent lights and 1500 hours for halogen. That is over five years' continuous use.”

Savage Marine created the lights using one of the brightest single chip 10W LEDs on the market, and offers its complete range of interior and exterior 88mm and 100mm fittings in LED, replacing 20W halogen fittings. Previously, Savage Marine used multiple-chip LEDs in its higher power fittings, creating multiple shadows (‘ghosting’) around the light.

“Energy consumption is a significant focus for Savage Marine," added Jon Freeman. "Marine craft run their lighting from batteries which are recharged from the engine, in consequence generating CO2 emissions very directly. The heat generated by halogen lights in the cabin will also lead to increased use of the air conditioning, if fitted. We’re delighted that the new technology offered by Marl is helping us to help our customers address these issues.”

Ulverston-based Marl has specialised in the design and manufacture of visible LED indication and illumination components and systems for over 35 years, to customers in the electronic, power generation, defence and telecommunications industries.
