A change in lighting units has brought lower energy bills to Gatwick Airport

Mega energy savings at GatwickSwitching from existing HID lamps to Megaman's 200W CLUSTERLITES has brought significantly reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs at Gatwick Airport's North Terminal.

Gatwick has more than 18,000 light fittings installed in the North Terminal - and 72,000 throughout the whole airport. For this project, Megaman worked closely with BAA's energy consultant Adrian Laycock to carry out a thorough energy survey of lighting throughout the building. Megaman then suggested using CLUSTERLITE, a high-wattage lighting solution which provides a real alternative to HID lamps.

Offering up to 33 per cent savings in energy consumption, CLUSTERLITE is said to combine all the virtues of compact fluorescent technology with excellent lumen maintenance after 15,000 hours of operation, superb colour rendering and uniformity plus outstanding lumen output.

Phase I of the project involved replacing over 500 of the original lamps within the international departure lounges. Further replacements are due to take place in Phase II, which will include more sections of the North Terminal, South Terminal plus Heathrow and Southampton airports.

"Gatwick Airport is a substantial user of energy and we need to ensure its use is efficient both in our existing airport facilities and in those that we develop in future years," said airport Managing Director Andy Flower. "This system meets these needs as well as providing effective lighting in the busy public areas of the terminal."

Adrian Laycock, Electrical Asset Manager for Gatwick, added: "Changing the lamps was a quick and easy operation as the lamps went straight into the existing fittings, which meant that the maintenance team could do the switchover overnight and avoid disruption to the lounge area during the day. We have initially calculated that energy savings to date for Phase I of the project has achieved a total of over £6000 per annum.

"Taking all of this into account, plus the performance of Megaman's CLUSTERLITES and the excellent service provided by the company, we are certainly very happy with the results."
